Ernst Kestner, a widower, is in his sixties and lives in New York. While sorting through some photos he finds a picture of himself as a young German soldier with a French girl, Janni, with whom he fell in love in 1944. Based on the true story of Oradour-sur-Glane, a French town that was nearly wiped out near the end of WWII. The entire ruined town has been preserved as a national memorial.
