Kendo (literally the way of the sword) is the modern version of kenjutsu, the art of the sword once practiced in Japan by the samurai. By modern version, it should be understood that kendo is not only a martial art but also a competitive sport, which therefore has certain rules. However, kendo is not only learning sword fighting techniques and tactics, but also spiritual learning. Kendo allows its practitioners to develop their strength of character, determination and moral strength. The practitioners are called kenshi or kendoka. Kendo is traditionally practiced in a dojo.
