While cars can be seen on virtually every street in every modernized country on the planet, to find the first reliable engines we would have to go back in time to Germany, where two inventors, Niklaus Otto and Karl Benz, revolutionized the way people travelled from A to B. The very first example of the machine that changed the world was the System Lutzmann Motor Carriage, manufactured in 1899 by Benz. It was a three-wheeled, selfpropelled carriage fuelled by a petrol engine. Over the next fifty years, Benz, Volkswagon and Porsche would lead the way in German engineering, creating some of the most popular and prestigious cars in the world.
