The 1970's were a classic era in sports car racing. Porsche and Renault were just two of the famous names that competed for glory during this time. The Porsche short-tail 917 was one of the newer lightweight vehicles introduced during the early 70's. The main opposition to the Gulf-Porsche team was Ferrari with their 512 model. Pedro Rodriguez set a new lap record of 3mins, 16.5 seconds, which was nine seconds faster than the current F1 lap record. With an astonishing speed of 257kms an hour, these were the world's fastest racing cars.
